Introduction: about us

Hello, everyone!
Our team, Omega, has the pleasure to introduce you the blog we created for the International management course. Our team is an international one as it consists of members from different countries. We decided to call it Omega because it represents multiple things, so that globalization. So for us this name symboizes the fact that the globalization has different aspects.

Our logo
Our logo is the merger of the globe and the last letter of the Greek alphabet - Omega (Ω). We use the Greek alphabet surrounds the globe to represent that our group would like to understand and accommodate to the ever-changing globalized world. The fusion of the globe and omega also shows the interdependence of the globe and us.

Yana:
Hi! My name is Yana and I am Russian. I always lived there but now I study in Toulouse, in the south of France. My passions are foreign languages and travelling. My goal is to create my own innovative company in Moscow after I finish my studies.













Stephanie:
Hey, my name is Stephanie and I'm a local Hong Kong student. I'm an out-going girl who love sports and travelling. Having been an outbound exchange student in last semester, I found that it is really enjoyable to share my thoughts with and listen to people who share different cultures and backgrounds. Let's have fun and feel free to share your view here =)








Hi everyone!!I'm Kathryn from Human Resources Management. I'm a talkative girl who likes smiling (but if only she finds its interesting :P).
I like singing karaoke, hang out with friends, watching movies and listening to music etc.
By taking this course, I hope I can know more about the world and widen my thinking about the globe.













Hi! My name is Linma and I’m a year 3 student majoring in Accountancy. My hometown is Hunan Province in mainland China. I enjoy playing the violin, singing, watching movies and TV series, and chatting with friends. I like communicate with people from different culture background because it opens my mind and helps me see things from different aspects. Hope we can make use of the blog and communicate our ideas and thoughts.




Our goals

By taking this course, our group is willing to understand in more details the mechanism of managing a company in the international context. Nowadays, it is hard to deny the impact of globalization on almost every company, so we think that this course will help us to be better prepared not only for our future careers but also for the daily life as we study in a very international university. We also hope that through the class discussions and activities, we can have more chances to have thought exchanges with our international classmates to make the in-class learning even more enjoyable and fruitful.


Our interests about this course

We consider that the topics we discuss every week are important and relevant for better understanding of international management. Therefore, the topics in which we are really interested are the politcal and legal environment of globalizarion, business ethics and motivating workers in the international context.
However, we would like to learn more about the process of preparing a company to go international because nowadays almost every company has to deal with it due to the interdependance of the world.

  1. Yes, you are right. Globalization can narrow the gaps between different countries that they can exchange their products and even culture and knowledge. I think that globalization enpower the big companies arround the world because they more budgets to produce and improve the products. I know that people in some poor countries may not be able to afford the high-price of products from the MNCs but it is not really so many MNCs established in the poor countries. Most MNCs would choose to establish in the developed countries so they can forecast there are some potencial customers in the market. And I think globalization may create some issues to the world but we cannt deny that it also benefit a lot to others. For example, the local people and comapnies can learn from the MNCs and they can improve their business and work. It might help the world to get improvement actually. But, we shouldn't ignore the negative impact by globalization at the same time.

  2. I agree to your statement that globalisation can bring countries closer together and as the first comment already pointed out MNCs have the ability and economic power to distribute their productd around the world.
    However, I disagree with your statement concerning the many local markets and the reasons why people still buy there. I think people still buy at local markets because that is part of their tradition and they may even know the people selling the products to them. I don't think this has anything to do with resistance to MNCs or their products. Furhter, I don't believe that those local markets will be replaced in the process of globalisation. International brnads might adjust their product offering and include local products like fruits etc, but in my opinion people will still visit those markets because it's part of their culture and living routine.

    Thanks for your blog that I really enjoy reading!

    I agree with you for most of the information you share: I think that a lot of people are trying to resist globalization by sticking with local producers..etc.

    I think we may find lots of other reasons though.
    First, I feel like some people are thinking more and more about the environment and feel more comfortable with products that do not come from too far away, people care about the carbon footprint.
    I also believe that people are getting more and more suspicious about products for which they have no idea about the origin (Is it healthy? Have the company treated its employees well while producing this product?...etc).
    Globalization also makes us communicate easier with people but more and more through screens (e-mails, skype...). Even if there is sort of a reduction of the distance, people start feeling a lack of real relationship with the others and they may have the need to prefer local markets so that they connect better with people living around.

    All these reasons finally make me believe that local markets will remain (at least for a while...!).

    Greatly done with the display of your blog! Other than the visuals, I also found it interesting to read the posts and ideas you have made so far.

    I would start off by saying I totally agree with the facts that you have mentioned how globalization has pulled together many different countries, which put much ease on topics such as trading and sharing information. MNCs have been beneficial to both developed and developing countries. Although they base their companies in developed areas, they usually outsource their production plants in less developed countries. Some may argue that these less developed countries are getting taken advantage of, but none the less, globalization and MNCs have created employment opportunities in these rural areas.

    As for some of the other comments I have read above, I also agree with what "icn" had mentioned in his sharing. With today's environmental issues and health concerns, more people are sticking to local products and feel less comfortable consuming foreign products. Globalization have been positive in many ways, but for it to completely take over local markets, I believe it will take some time before this actually occurs. Overall, greatly done with the blogs and highly anticipating for your second blog! Goodluck!!

  5. Very clear structure and well organized.

    I agree that whether or not to localize the products should depend on the nature of the products. As you mentioned, electronic products are worldly absorbed, so MNC do not need to localize its products. On the other hand, McDonald's is a good example to illustrate why some MNC choose to localize their products at certain degrees. Something the whole world can share equally, but something cannot just like culture tradition, people's taste...Some countries prefer spicy food, strong taste but some prefer mild taste.

    Besides, Nigel Hollis (2009) suggested that " is there a difference between global and local brands in terms of what motivates people to buy them?" This is important for MNC to choose if or not to modify its products to motivate people to buy them. Also, it is interesting to say that not every country thinks local is better. Is that true? What are the underneath reasons or causes? These may add some more information to your blog.

    As you mentioned, many companies around the globe has adopted the global expansion strategy contributing to globalization. However, many companies have also failed to succeed in the global market as they may not have identified factors such as location economies, cost pressures or local responsiveness. It is far more difficult for companies to analyze factors abroad and it requires much greater investments. For example, it is difficult to predict and forecast the economic conditions of another country and consider all the external factors, such as location that will affect profits. Trends are also rapidly changing and companies must be able to keep up with local pressures, investments on research and development is time consuming and therefore if business do not respond quick enough to the local market than they will also fail to operate their businesses abroad. On the other hand, companies can adopt the easiest option to expand their businesses globally, the international strategy. This consists of low cost pressures and lower pressures to be locally responsive- taking products first produced in the domestic market and then selling them internationally but with few customizations; very similar to the 'global' strategy that you talked about.

    I like your topic! It is very interesting. In my opinion, whether a company adopt globalization strategy or not should depend on the products' nature and the positioning strategy of the company.For some products, becoming more localized is a good way to attract consumers and increase sales, such as the example in your blog,McDonald. However, in some other industries, companies should consider the degree of localization seriously. Take fashion industry for example,When western fashion brands entered into Asian market. They still put western models in their advertisements like H&M. Although some clothing styles are not suitable for Asian consumers, they still launched same products in markets all over the world. The needs of consumers regarding clothing and fashion are not the same, but very few fashion companies adopt glocalization strategies.This may because that these fashion companies seek to sell western style fashion worldwide. If they go too localized,it will influence their brand image.In fashion industry, western style means high-end.There is a very interesting case in China. A Chinese local fashion brand, Me&City, only invite Hollywood stars and western models to make advertisements. The company believe these ads can help build up a high-end fashion brand, so consumers will be more likely to pay more to buy their products.This case is also a result of globalization but on the contrary, the company avoid being too localized.So we can see that whether a company adopt globalization strategy or not depends on the products' nature and the positioning strategy of the company.

  9. Hey Omega!!

    With reading all about globalization in the previous blogs, it was interesting to read about localization this time. I find it interesting to read your blog, because it gave me a totally different perspective as to how companies can benefit and take advantage of the market's needs more precisely. I do believe to some degree that localization can help companies increase sales. That is why I think some local companies can compete with big MNC's that enter the local market, because these smaller companies provide values that the consumers believe is better, and they have done so because becoming more localized can help satisfy the needs of these consumers in more detail.

    But like some of the comments mentioned above, it is not always a great move for any company to become more localized. Bigger branded companies may not benefit as much from localization, because these MNC's succeed for they have a brand image worldwide that attract the global audience. If they change their materials or products to fit the needs of one local market, the consumers may lose confidence in their products. For example, Louis Vuitton, being a high-end big branded company, it would not be a smart move to start making bags out of something less than their premium leather to cope with a environmentally friendly market. Consumers would think the brand is less attractive and their global image would be lost.
